At the PGA Championship, Tony Finau Slides Down the Leaderboard

On Sunday for the PGA Championship‘s final round, Oak Hill Country Club’s favorable scoring conditions were back, but Tony Finau’s outstanding major performance was not.

Finau finished the tournament tied for 72nd place after disappointingly finishing his 28th major with a 7-over-par 77. Finau is a native of Utah. The Wanamaker Trophy was won by Brooks Koepka, who finished the competition at 9-under par. Finau’s performance of 15 over par was his worst ever in a major where he cut.

The PGA Championship

Finau, who failed to record a birdie on Sunday, finished below the rest of the players who made the cut, which was at +5. The other players were Mark Hubbard (+18) and Kazuki Higa (+20).

On the par-3 11th hole, in which he made four bogeys and a quadruple bogey after running into danger off the tee, he did card a 6.

  • Finau’s disappointing performance at the PGA Championship was his worst ever in a major where he cut.
  • Finau missed the cut but carded a 6 on the 11th hole.
  • He struggled with putting and rough, costing him at Oak Hill.

After the disastrous hole No. 11, Finau made six straight pars, a difficult effort on the testing course in western New York. However, he closed with a bogey on the par-4 18th, three-putting from inside 10 feet, to incur a score of 72.

It was that kind of a day for the 33-year-old father of five, one of the hottest golfers on the circuit entering the competition.

Finau struggled with his putting on Sunday, but throughout the first three rounds, he could not stay out of the thick rough at Oak Hill which cost him. The West High alumnus spoke extensively before the competition about the need to drive the ball well and straight to remain in contention at the challenging, 7,500-yard layout.

It is clear that he didn’t do that. Finau tied for 64th at Bethpage Black in the 2019 PGA Championship, which was a cut-made major, which was his previous worst finish. The U.S. Open, which takes place at the Los Angeles Country Club from June 15 to 18, is the following major.
